As I've been experimenting with the various coaster designs the past couple months, I've found some designs looked far more interesting when I held the layers in my hand with gaps in between them. This month, I started experimenting with this concept, first by holding the layers apart by wooden struts, and later by screwing them together with various hardware maintaining the gaps. I was pleased with the results, especially with certain back lighting and side lighting conditions. I'm calling these pieces standoffs.

In order to experiment with lighting conditions with more control, I developed a Lightbox that the standoffs fit into. It consists of 5 separate layers of 6 LEDs. The brighness of each layer is controlled by a knob on the back of the housing. It's powered by a rechargeable 9V battery.

I made a series of standoffs based on coaster designs to play with in the lightbox. These photos show each piece with all of the lights turned up to maxium bightness. However, each piece looks very different when I play with the knobs to adjust the brighness of each layer.

For the best viewing experience, these standoff pieces need to be viewed with the eyes aligned with the center of the piece. With Sine Wave in Moss, I'm exploring the potential of assembling a set of standoff components into a single piece that accommodates multiple viewing angles.
